Data Management - Microsoft DTS to Informatica

Moving legacy code to a unified enterprise platform.

The Challenge
Our client, a large publicly traded utility company, had decided to use a consolidated platform of Informatica data integration tools running on a Solaris UNIX platform to provide the data integration services needed by its operating companies. The operating companies had executed their data integration activities on a variety of platforms and tool sets – some configurations were easily converted to the new platform. Others – specifically those configurations which were based on Microsoft’s SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services package (DTS package) technology – presented more complex technical challenges.

Aside from the technical migration challenges, each DTS package that was part of a mission-critical interface to the national grid had to undergo extensive software quality assurance and installation validation processes – failure of the DTS packages could impact data feeds to the grid.

Our Approach
As an Informatica technology partner with deep expertise in both the UNIX and Windows platforms as well as a deep bench of local professionals with project-specific expertise, we were asked to assist in the DTS package migration effort and bring it to on the strategic initiative schedule.

The DTS packages were converted according to specified business requirements. When technical challenges required innovations outside what the data integration platform could provide, Trident’s senior data management professionals were able to work with Southern Company’s enterprise architecture team to construct functional alternatives based on the organizations strategic technical directives. This occurred most frequently when the DTS package executed functionality not supported by the new data integration platform. In these cases, Trident’s team designed web services, in both UNIX and Windows architectures, to provide the intended functionality. This was in line with Southern Company’s strategic alignment towards delivering functionality and data via service oriented architectures (SOAs).

Software Technologies

  • SQL Server 2000
  • Informatica PowerCenter 8.*
  • Visual Studio 2008
Results
Over 200 DTS packages were converted and moved to production with minimal issues. The client now has the consolidated platform fully operational.
