The Challenge
Our client, a major payment processing company, had been
through a failed system development effort in an attempt to reengineer a back-office transaction system as well
as integrate a client-facing web component.
The company engaged to perform this development effort had made the common mistake of focusing on the
technology rather than first developing a deep understanding of current business processes and then
identifying potentials for process improvements.
A critical success factor for this client was that it had to continue to respond to its competitors using
its current information systems while any reengineering effort was under way.
Our Approach
Our IT management consultants conducted an extensive business process analysis to first document current
business processes. We worked closely with client representatives from all divisions to iteratively review
process diagrams, meeting summaries, and other engagement artifacts. Only when these representatives agreed
that the current processes were sufficiently documented did we address potential process improvements.
We considered each major business process in the context of a set of fundamental principles and new enabling
technologies and mapped our recommendations at the business process level across the various business divisions.
We also provided a framework for evaluating and prioritizing these improvement recommendations as well as
a suggested implementation approach.
Software Technologies
Because this was a management consulting engagement, there was little focus on technologies. We did make extensive use of Microsoft Word® and Visio® as well as use of a process mapping tool, Metastorm ProVision®.
Results
By following our recommendations and implementation approach, our client has been able to continue to respond
effectively to its competitors while re-engineering fundamental business processes to support its business
growth objectives. Technology has truly become a competitive advantage for this client.
