The Challenge
Our client, a regional real-estate investment trust operating in the Southeast, had mission critical reports that were maintained in a Microsoft Access database. The logic behind the reports was performing rudimentary online analytical processing (OLAP) analysis on gigabytes of data downloaded from source systems into the Access database. The report took a minimum of an hour to run and often failed to run at all. For this reason, the reports could only be run once weekly on the weekends. The company wanted more real-time data and faster access to the reports.
Our Approach
Although SQL Server Analysis Services would have easily handled this challenge, the client did not have deep expertise in that tool for support purposes. Instead, we designed a solution using SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Reporting Services, leveraging skills the client's team already had.
Because of the nature of the data and reports, we designed a dimensional data model that would support not only the currently defined reports but reports that had not yet been defined. We developed ETL processes that would extract from source systems nightly and precalculate the most heavily accessed reports.

Results
Once implemented, the reports had an average sub-second response time. In addition, we were able to deploy links to the SSRS reports to the company's SharePoint site, improving access to this mission critical information.
